Game of Hope sign

On Thursday, January 16, 2025, Milford High School will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Game of Hope, an event held in honor of Lauren Hill, a young athlete whose courage and determination united a nation. This year’s basketball games will feature the Ladies of Milford, Kings, and Seton playing for a cause greater than themselves, continuing Lauren’s legacy and raising funds to support the fight against cancer.

Two females holding sign of hopeLauren Hill’s journey began with her dream to play college basketball, even after being diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), a rare and aggressive brain tumor. On November 2, 2014, Lauren fulfilled that dream by scoring her first collegiate basket for Mount St. Joseph University, inspiring millions and sparking a movement that has raised millions for The Cure Starts Now Foundation.

The Game of Hope is a testament to Lauren’s impact, uniting players, families, and fans in a shared mission of hope and resilience. This year’s event will kick off with the JVB contest between Milford and Seton at 4:30 PM, followed by JV and Varsity matchups against Kings. A special pre-game ceremony will precede the Varsity game at 7:30 PM, honoring survivors, caregivers, and loved ones affected by cancer or other afflictions.

“This game is about more than basketball,” said Kristi McKenney, Milford High School Health Teacher and event organizer. “It’s about honoring Lauren’s incredible legacy and bringing the community together to make a difference.”

Attendees will also have the chance to participate in the Layup4Lauren Challenge at halftime, raffles, bake sales, and other activities designed to support the cause. Over the years, the Game of Hope has become a Milford tradition, featuring unique elements such as T-shirts, signs supporting the cause, and even a flash mob-style inspirational dance in its earlier years.

Lauren Hill’s mantra, “Never give up,” continues to inspire this event and all who participate. The Game of Hope not only celebrates her life but also carries forward her mission to create change and fund vital research. Proceeds from the event will be donated to The Cure Starts Now Foundation, ensuring Lauren’s legacy lives on.

Join Milford High School on January 16 as we celebrate the power of community, resilience and hope, and honor 10 years of the Game of Hope. #PlayFor22
