Important Update: Transition to Sister, Grade-Banded Schools Paused

The Milford Exempted Village Schools District (MEVSD) has made an important decision to pause the planned transition to Sister, Grade-Banded Schools. This decision, unanimously approved by the Board of Education at the December 10 work session, was based on a recommendation by Superintendent John Spieser and supported by Treasurer Ackermann’s suggestions and need for further financial evaluations. The pause allows the District to retain its exceptional educators while addressing financial challenges thoughtfully and responsibly.

Why the Pause?

The transition to Sister, Grade-Banded Schools would have resulted in significant changes, including the elimination of approximately 30 staff positions. By pausing this plan, the District:

  • Allows for Thorough Evaluation: Treasurer Ackermann’s financial assessments highlighted the need for additional time to explore alternative solutions for financial challenges. Ackermann also suggested the pause and need for further evaluations after a quick assessment, citing that the $4.5 million in reductions made since January 2024 and the cuts to pay-to-play, kindergarten fees, and state minimum transportation granted the district additional time to assess.

  • Protects Staff: Avoids a Reduction in Force, retaining talented educators who are vital to the Milford community

Superintendent Spieser shared his perspective:

"While this transition remains on the table as a potential option for future financial adjustments, I could not, in good conscience, allow our District to move forward with such a near-irreversible change at this time. I could not risk losing the exceptional educators who have become an integral part of our Milford family—especially when there remains even the slightest possibility of finding alternative pathways to address our financial challenges."
