Milford High School junior Taylor J. is bringing a bit of whimsy to one of the region’s most prestigious art spaces. Her original artwork has been selected for the Cincinnati Art Museum’s annual 10x10 Teen Art Expo, a juried exhibition that features the creative work of students in grades 7–12 from across Greater Cincinnati.
Each year, student artists are invited to submit a 10-inch-by-10-inch piece that reflects a selected theme—this year’s being "Whimsy". A panel of teen volunteers selects the theme, reviews submissions, curates the exhibit, and organizes the event’s opening celebration.
Taylor’s artwork, inspired by her neighbor’s koi pond, will be on display in the Marek-Weaver Family Commons from April 15–20, 2025, during regular museum hours.
“I felt really connected to the theme,” said Taylor. “I love everything fantasy—crystals, creatures, all of it. I originally wanted to include fantasy creatures, but I ended up drawing inspiration from something a little closer to home—my neighbor’s koi fish pond.”
That sense of magic is exactly what the exhibit seeks to celebrate. Taylor originally set out to create a fantasy piece featuring mythical creatures but found her inspiration in something more personal and close to home.
She credits Milford High School art teacher Mr. Luessen for encouraging her to enter. “He always lets me know when competitions are coming up,” she said. “He told me about this one, and I decided to go for it.”
While Taylor aspires to a career in fashion design, visual art remains a passion. “I hope to enter more competitions like this in the future,” she said. “Even if I’m not always selected, this moment will stay with me.”
A public Opening Party will be held on Saturday, April 19, from 1–3 p.m., where Taylor plans to attend with friends and family. Learn more at: https://www.cincinnatiartmuseum.org/events-programs/events-list/10x10-teen-expo-opening-party/?date=April%2019,%202025%2001%3A00%20PM
