Milford High School’s Tech Squad, led by Library Media Specialist Melissa Chandler, has grown from a simple tech help desk to a community-focused initiative. Originally providing tech support and troubleshooting to students, the program now involves service activities that teach Scratch coding to elementary students and assist senior citizens with technology at the Claremont County Senior Service Center.

Students like Kainen Shults bring unique experiences to the team. Though he initially left Tech Squad to pursue music, Shults returned, contributing his knowledge from the IT Academy. He helps teach newer members and works with seniors on issues ranging from managing spam email to organizing device settings.

"Although I don’t plan to pursue a career in tech, I find it incredibly rewarding to use my skills to help others,” said Shults. “It’s a great way to give back to the community while applying what I’ve learned."

Chandler sees the benefits on both sides saying that the tech squad not only fosters technical know-how but also leadership, communication and interpersonal skills.

“The seniors are always so appreciative, and it energizes them to be around young people. For our students, it’s a chance to practice their skills in real-world scenarios and develop empathy,” Chandler explained.

While there aren't formal competitions, joining the program itself is quite a competitive scenario. Students must apply, undergo evaluations and interview with only 21 selected each year. Despite the rigorous selection, Shults encourages others to join, emphasizing the leadership skills they can gain.

“Tech Squad is more than just a tech class. Miss Chandler also teaches leadership and essential career skills, like giving presentations and understanding leadership principles. It’s about more than just doing the right thing—it involves learning different ways to guide and support others, even from behind the scenes,” said Shults.

Overall, the Tech Squad embodies Milford’s commitment to fostering community connections and developing well-rounded, empathetic leaders who reflect the district's "Portrait of an Eagle." As Chandler puts it, “It’s a lot of fun, and I’m proud of what our kids have accomplished.”
