Milford Exempted Village Schools' Unified Cheer program is doing more than just boosting school spirit—it’s bringing students together, fostering friendships and building bonds that extend beyond the sidelines. Through peer-to-peer mentorship, Unified Cheer participants practice and perform as a team, creating a sense of community that truly embodies the idea of being stronger together.

Unified Cheer partners students with intellectual disabilities with their peers who serve as mentors, learning and practicing cheers, chants and basic tumbling to perform at select home games.

The program, now in its fifth year, continues to grow in both participation and community support. “Unified Cheer isn’t just about performing at games. It’s about creating friendships and building connections that last long after the final whistle,” says Trena Panko, one of the program’s leaders.

The impact of Unified Cheer extends beyond the field, with students bonding over activities like team photos, themed games and even school dances. “It’s really special to see how these relationships flourish. At events like Homecoming, you’ll see the Unified Cheer students dancing together and having the time of their lives,” adds co-leader Jacalyn Parsley.

The community response has been overwhelmingly positive. Parents often share how meaningful the program is for their children, with many asking if their students can continue participating after graduation. Unified Cheer fosters a sense of belonging that goes beyond the school day, helping students make lasting friendships and memories.

With a bright future ahead, Unified Cheer continues to exemplify the district’s commitment to inclusivity and acceptance. “It’s been amazing to see the connections made through this program,” Panko says. “Our students are learning that we’re more alike than we are different, and that’s a lesson that will carry them through life.”
