To advance to the regionals, teams had to win both their morning and afternoon trials. Milford’s senior team won both trials, and finished third in the overall competition!
Milford’s second team also had a great showing at districts. The team, composed of juniors and two seniors, includes: Leah Breuer, Olivia Ruhlman, Grace Ruhlman, Ben Harris, Myriam Wane, Owen Stephens, and Madie Friedland.
The following team members received individual awards in their trials:
Grace Ruhlman- Best witness
Eric Hughett- Best witness
Leah Breuer- Best witness
Madie Friedland- Best attorney
Lili Turner- best attorney
Social studies teachers, Gaby Downey and Anna O’Neil, are the team advisors and Melissa Marcin, Esq. is the legal advisor.
“Melissa Marcin is wonderful. She puts in a lot of volunteer hours to help train the kids and make them successful,” said Anna O’Neil.
In the Ohio high school mock trial competition, students assume the roles of witnesses and attorneys to present both sides of a case. Local judges and attorneys volunteer their time and expertise to preside over and score the mock trials.
The Ohio High School Mock Trial Program is Ohio’s largest high school academic competition and is among the largest high school mock trial programs in the nation. More than 375 teams compete in Ohio. This year the case is a civil case about the defamation of a governor by a local TV station and their high school intern.
