Congratulations 2019 Homecoming Royalty & Court

At Friday’s football game, Milford High School crowned two female students as Homecoming Royalty. In past years, Milford High School has crowned a female homecoming queen and a male homecoming king. This year, because the “king and queen” are two female students, they will be referred to as “Homecoming Royalty.” This change in terminology was made to reflect the voice of Milford’s student body and to ensure all students have the opportunity to feel included.
“Choosing students for Homecoming Court is a long-standing tradition that has always been completely decided by student votes, and this year is no different,” said Nancy House, Superintendent. “Congratulations to the 14 students who were picked by their peers to represent their class as Homecoming Royalty and Court.”
Selecting Homecoming Royalty and Court is a popularity contest. Historically, the king and queen have been senior students and the homecoming court is made up of students representing all grades. Students are first asked to write down their choice of the classmate they want to represent their class on the homecoming court. Students are listed on the ballot as individuals, not as couples. From that list, the top nominees at each grade level are voted upon by the students in their grade level to represent them on Homecoming Court, and to select the “king and queen.”
This year, based upon nominations submitted by the senior class, a female student appeared on the ballot as one of the students eligible to be voted as “king.” This female student received the most votes from her classmates and was named Homecoming Royalty at the annual Homecoming football game Friday night. Moving forward, Milford High School will not use the term “King and Queen” to refer to the two students who receive the highest votes from their peers. They will be known this year and in the future as “Homecoming Royalty.”
“The selection of our Homecoming Royalty is an opportunity for our students to have their voice heard. I fully support the voice and choice demonstrated by our students in selecting this year’s Homecoming Royalty” said Josh Kauffman, Milford High School Principal.
