Posted on: November 2, 2016

Lisa Holt-Taylor, a 3rd Grade Science and Social Studies Teacher at Boyd E. Smith Elementary, has been named as the Hixson Architecture, Engineering, Interiors “Teacher of the Year” for the 2015-2016 school year. The award was presented in October to Holt-Taylor at a ceremony honoring her and the other finalists at Hixson’s offices in Mt. Adams.

Through the program, Hixson associates are encouraged to nominate a teacher of one of their children or grandchildren. Holt-Taylor was nominated by Greg Hammond, whose daughter was in Holt-Taylor’s classroom during the 2015-2016 school year. Since the program’s inception, Hixson has awarded more than $135,000 to outstanding local teachers.

A teacher for the past 14 years, Holt-Taylor began her professional life as a nurse, focusing on cardiac rehabilitation as well as pediatrics. According to Holt-Taylor, this career path helped open her eyes to the need for education which takes into account each student’s diverse experiences and backgrounds.

“Knowing where the student is at emotionally, socially, and academically is the most important step in delivering an effective education experience," said Holt-Taylor in her award-winning entry. “As education changes, educators must adapt to being flexible in the delivery of instruction and provide differentiated education drawing on our student strengths.”

A resident of Indian Hill, Holt-Taylor holds a B.S. in Nursing and Sociology from Eastern Kentucky University and a Master’s in Education and a School Counseling Certification from Xavier University. She is on track to earn a Master in Arts of Teaching (MAT) in Biology from Miami University in December 2016. A member of the Ohio Education Association (OEA), Milford Education Association (MEA) and National Science Teacher Association (NSTA), Holt-Taylor has also been honored as the 2016 Conservation Educator of the Year Award from Clermont County Soil and Water District, as well as the Milford Schools Educator of the Year in 2015.

In addition to Holt-Taylor, there were four other finalists for the Hixson Teacher of the Year. All nominees completed an application process, which looks at things such as professional development activities, community involvement, and teaching philosophy. Submitted entries are then reviewed by an independent panel comprised of school administrators and teachers from around the region, which selected Holt-Taylor as this year’s Hixson Teacher of the Year recipient. In addition to the $5,000 prize given to Holt-Taylor, each finalist received a monetary award and a plaque recognizing their professional excellence at the Hixson reception.
